Fan Coil Unit (FCU)

A Fan Coil Unit (FCU) is a crucial component in modern HVAC systems, designed to regulate the temperature within individual rooms or zones. It operates by drawing in air from the room, passing it over a coil that contains either hot or chilled water, and then blowing the conditioned air back into the space. This coil, depending on the season, is supplied with either heated or cooled water from a central boiler or chiller system. The integrated fan ensures a continuous circulation of air, maintaining a comfortable indoor climate. FCUs are commonly found in commercial buildings, hotels, hospitals, and residential apartments due to their ability to provide independent temperature control for each room. Compact in size and relatively easy to install, fan coil units come in various configurations such as ceiling-mounted, wall-mounted, or floor-standing, and are often controlled by a thermostat to ensure optimal comfort. By allowing for zonal climate control and reducing energy wastage, FCUs contribute significantly to the energy efficiency of HVAC systems.

Construction of an Fan Coil Unit (FCU)

The construction of a Fan Coil Unit (FCU) is centred around a compact and efficient design that allows it to perform heating or cooling functions within a specific indoor space. At its core, an FCU consists of a metallic casing or housing that encloses all its internal components, ensuring protection and efficient airflow management. Inside this casing, one of the primary components is the heat exchanger coil, typically made from copper tubes with aluminium fins to enhance heat transfer. This coil carries either chilled or hot water, depending on whether the unit is in cooling or heating mode.

Adjacent to the coil is the fan assembly, which usually consists of one or more centrifugal or tangential fans powered by an electric motor. These fans draw in air from the room through a return air grille, pass it over the coil, and then distribute the conditioned air back into the room through an outlet grille or duct connection. A filter is also integrated into the unit to capture dust and airborne particles, ensuring that clean air is circulated.

Additionally, most FCUs are equipped with a drain pan located beneath the coil to collect and remove condensate water that forms during cooling operations. The unit may also include control elements such as a thermostat, valves, and actuators that regulate water flow and fan speed, offering precise temperature control. All these components are assembled within a durable frame that is either mounted on the ceiling, floor, or wall, depending on the installation requirement.

Main Components of a Process Chiller

An Industrial Process Chiller is made up of several essential components that work together to regulate temperature and ensure smooth operation. Each part plays a crucial role in the refrigeration cycle:

  1. Compressor:
This is the heart of the chiller. It compresses the refrigerant gas, increasing its pressure and temperature so it can move through the system efficiently. Types of compressors include scroll, screw, reciprocating, and centrifugal, depending on the chiller’s capacity and design.
  2. Evaporator:
The evaporator is where the process fluid (such as water or glycol) passes through and loses its heat to the refrigerant. This is where heat absorption occurs, and the refrigerant turns into a gas.
  3. Condenser:
After compression, the hot refrigerant gas flows into the condenser. In this component, the heat is removed either by air (air-cooled) or water (water-cooled), and the refrigerant changes back into a liquid.
  4. Expansion Valve:
The expansion valve regulates the flow of refrigerant into the evaporator. It reduces the pressure and temperature of the liquid refrigerant before it re-enters the evaporator to absorb more heat.
  5. Process Pump & Reservoir:
A circulation pump pushes the cooled fluid to the process and brings the warmed fluid back to the chiller. The reservoir holds the process fluid and acts as a buffer to handle thermal loads.
  6. Control System:
Modern chillers come with advanced control panels and sensors that monitor and regulate temperatures, flow rates, pressures, and operating parameters for safety, efficiency, and precision.
Together, these components form a reliable and energy-efficient system that keeps industrial operations stable, regardless of heat-generating activities within the facility.
